Hi Danni, I work for GBG (https://www.global.gbgplc.com/) , a global data and identity intelligence solutions provider with a product portfolio supporting enterprise customers to use data and identity intelligence effectively. We are a global company totalling over 700 employees with revenue trebling from £100 to £300 million by 2020. Specifically, your graphic design experience coupled with your academic background was of immense interest to us. This is a great opportunity to grow your career in a fast paced moving business! We have a strong focus on our people; see our people strategy for 2020 (link below)! For this role, this work includes graphic creation for our websites, layout and visuals for client proposals and presentations, infographics and print projects. You will work closely with the other members of the creative team, working on projects led by the marketing team. Technically, we use the Adobe product suite as well as .Sketch, HTML & CSS, Keynote, Powerpoint and After Effects. I would be delighted to discuss this further should you be interested;if interested please do register your interest at the link below by applying - the JD is contained here too. Adrien Debos:
  • Hi Danni, Nice to meet you and thanks for reaching out. I replied to your survey, hopefully that worked out. Not sure if it is something you can change at this point but the answer fields were really tiny since they were on a single line, so it made it really tricky to double check the entirety of the answers. My turn to ask you questions! Are you planning on becoming a 2D character artist, or are you aiming for 3D as well? Which industry or studio would you like to work in? Where can I see some of your art? :) Let me know if you want to keep in touch. I can go more in depth with some questions you might have. cheers, Adrien

Application to StudioGobo Internship
  • Hi Jenny, I hope you are well. I do not know if you remember me but you ever so kindly answered my questionnaire for my research a couple of months ago via LinkedIn. Thank you so much for this- I quoted you and brought some of your artwork up from Artstation onto the projector. I am pleased to say I did succeed in a high grade! Without the quotes, the presentations were rather dry. I am writing to you in enormous hope that you would consider allowing me to shadow you for a day, so I could learn what it is like to work within the industry, for an incredible company. I realise this is a massive ask, and I would not in any way whatsoever hinder your daily tasks or workflow. (I am happy to retrieve tea all day.) I really admire your work, (have started following your art on numerous social media) and the style of studio Gobo. I am really keen to become a concept artist, though flexible to becoming a character artist as I am learning fast 3D. I learn quickly and am devoted to improving my skills every day. I realise your day must be very busy and your time very valuable, so I do not mind waiting till you have a more open day in your calendar. Anything witnessed within the studio would be kept entirely confidential, and naturally I would sign confidentiality forms. You can reach me any time at my email: dannichan94@hotmail.co.uk, or you are welcome to call me on my mobile number:---------------------  I’ve attached my website and portfolio below. Congratulations on your film!! www.dannichan.co.uk Thank you so much, Danni

Heey Danni! I am just getting back from my holidays! Let me drop you into an email with my art director. We sometimes have interns for a week or so, that might be a great experience for you! I will ask him if that is possible. :)

PS. your homepage isnt working, maybe you can send me another link with some work?

Oops that would be Dannichan.co.uk it must have autocorrected. Apologies! And thank you so much! That’s amazing. :)

No problem! I sent all your details over to my art director. We usually do 1 week internships so you can have some time to experience the whole workflow. :) I do want to let you know though that the current projects we have are very different from Disney Infinity. Its a lot more realistic, which is also fun, but I wanted to make sure you are not looking for a specific style. :) I will let you know soon! Jenny

Hi Jenny, Thank you so much for this. It’s very exciting. Hopeful. *_* I’m quite flexible to what style I work in and would be extremely grateful for the opportunity and experience. Once again, thank you very much. I really appreciate your help. Danni :)
  • I have just been reading through your profile. (Sorry, I’m so nosy >.<) You speak quite a few languages? Did you do this through high school or was it something you learnt along side your career? Does it help you in your day to day work? I’m thinking of learning Mandarin Chinese. :)

Haha I studied Japanese for 4 years and lived in Japan. French and Spanish mainly in school. Its great fun but not really helping in the job right now. Unless you want to work for Nintendo in Japan :P

Heeey Danni!! I just heard back from Paul and he is very sorry to say that we currently dont have any spots available. He wants to send you a reply himself as well. It seems to be mainly that Gobo only does paid internships (they dont want to be known for "using" interns unfairly) and right now we have used up the budget. But that doesnt mean we wont have anything in the future! If you are up for an adventure try applying at Daedalic entertainment in hamburg, they do beautiful hand drawn games and even though they dont pay much you can learn a lot! :)

Hi Jenny! Aww never mind! Thank you so much for asking for me. :) I really appreciate it. I’ll keep an eye out for when you do have internships in the future. And I’ll have a look I love travelling 🇩🇪 i look forward to when being good is available to view. ^_^ good luck with your future projects! :D

APPLICATION TO STUDIO GOBO

Dear StudioGobo

I hope you are well. My name is Danni Chan and I am a 3rd year Animation / Illustration student from the University of Worcester. Jenny Harder ever so kindly answered my questionnaire about working in the Industry for my research a couple of months ago via LinkedIn. Open Application to Cartoon Network

As a result of attending the AniMates 3: Game On! I was able to meet Drew Roper - creative Director of Yaminations in Birmingham. I was able to use this event to network, and introduce myself. I showed him my animatic work for the preproduction work and was able to talk about some of the projects they have going at the studio. They are currently looking for a concept artist to work on a Roahl Dahl piece but Drew is looking for someone who can get a real level of detail from their concept art. I feel that if I really worked on it I would be able to achieve this skill and it is a goal for the future for me to work upon. Drew was really pleasant and forthcoming, I asked for some shadowing experience and he said to drop an email later to himself and his assistant. They often take students on. While the experience is within Stop-Motion which I have quite little experience in- other than my PaperCut animation I did in my previous degree, he did suggest putting me in their concept art department. It is a small company, which works tight knit like a family. He mentioned previously that students cannot be taught and I said all I need to do is google it and figure it out on my own, so I believe he feels confident I will be suitable to a weeks experience. I will be going to stay with my friend Helen who lives in Birmingham city centre to minimise the commute cost.

I did my best to show my enthusiasm for animation and since I had met him in person, left my email quite informal.

He responded with:

Hi Danni,

Thanks for the email. It was lovely to have met you recently.

Sure, please get in touch once you’re finishing up and we’ll see if we can get you some experience at the studio.

Your project is looking great so all the very best with completing it!

Cheers,
DR

Hi Mark,

I hope you are well.

I am writing to you with an application to work at the character shop in Birmingham. I am really interested in working at your studio- and completely fell in love with Cliff the Rock, partly because of my obsession with pugs and I think his character animation is hilarious. I still particularly enjoy children's television- and will quite happily watch kids programs.

I realise that your studio is in high demand, and you must be extremely busy (and you probably get a lot of students writing to you....) I am an illustrator, and a concept artist, and have a previous degree/HND of Graphic Design.  I am majoring in 2D animation at the University of Worcester (I have some 3D modelling Maya), and I would really love some industry experience. If you could offer me a short internship or week's, or even a few day's work shadowing, I would be extremely grateful! I have a good experience of a range of programs, learn fast and would make myself useful. (And not get in the way.)

Currently, I am working on my film for my final major film for animation 'Song of the Wisps'. It is my goal to have something to enter into a competition by the summer. I've been told I'm unlikely to be able to finish it by May (graduation time) but I'm going to try anyway!  I've attached the animatic below. If you have time, please take a look and I'd be extremely thankful for any feedback.

Final produced animatic for my final year project. Special thanks to my brother Ryan Chan for the music production, Emma Tully for voice acting and Charlie ...
I will be at British Animation Awards at the custard factory in Birmingham for the three days, perhaps I will see you and some colleagues here. I'd love to have chat and a coffee.

I hope this email finds you well,

Best wishes,

Danni Chan
